Ways to help employees in the Mississippi and Louisiana areas.
Keep in mind that employees experiencing disaster might not be able to access emails.
A simple text from a manager goes a long way to show support and care.
Here are some other things you can do:
Proactively come up with 3-5 thoughtful ideas to help before you reach out to employees.
Then make these 3-5 thoughtful ideas a standard should any other disastrous or misfortune happen in the future.
When you reach out to employees, say something like:
I am sending light and love to you, your family, and those affected right now. We are prepared to do all we can to support you through this. As a start, we can and will... Here are some things we can do to help:
Move or reschedule meetings
Record internal meetings that they'd like to be a part of but can't attend
Proceed with grace and give space; we know this is a challenging time
Take paid time off - don't have paid time off, we will pay you anyway
Connect with a [name the organization] local to MS/LA community organization and provide support where needed
Create a 'care and needs' form for employees impacted to complete and request when they have an immediate need.
Message to managers: Keep in mind that employees experiencing disaster might not be able to access emails. A simple text from a manager goes a long way to show support and care. All it takes is a quick note to say, "No need to respond. Thinking of you. If I can help in any way, let me know." Remember, it is free to be kind, and humanity in the workplace goes a long way.
Light and Love,
Charisse Fontes
